  • David Richwhite Playing it Strange

Music is something close to the heart of David Richwhite. The benefits, he believes, of creating music are immeasurable, giving those who take part a sense of purpose, pride, and ultimately joy.
And so, David Richwhite became a supporter of “Play it Strange”, a charitable Trust which encourages young New Zealander’s to develop interests and skills in music.

With the support of David Richwhite and others, the trust has given out over 2000 ukuleles to schools nationwide. Some of the money donated by David Richwhite will also provide professional development courses for teachers in charge of the “Ukulele Orchestras”.

David Richwhite learned the ukulele as a child and can still play a few chords. “It’s the first instrument I played, very badly! The Play it Strange concept of focusing on encouraging music at schools is absolutely wonderful. The ukulele is an instrument you can get out to a lot of people. It’s a great way for them to get into music."

In recognition of his contribution to Play it Strange, the Trust formed the David Richwhite Lyric Award which is presented each year to promising up and coming composers. In 2010 the David Richwhite Lyric award was presented by Emily Perkins, one of New Zealand’s top female novelists.

David Richwhite however, is not only a supporter and philanthropist of the musical arts, but also a composer and recording guitarist himself. In 2009 David Richwhite formed the London band “Lonsdale Boys Club” which is currently producing their first album under the label of Island Records, a record label also promoting industry heavyweights such as Bon Jovi, Jennifer Lopez and The Killers.

LBC it seems is destined for great international success, with several sold out live shows under their belt and a nod from BBC Radio 1’s Zane Low as the “next hype”, watch this space!
